The seaside day was a single-day expedition requiring an early departure and producing a specific set of experiences that were the same for essentially everybody who went. Here are twelve.
1. Asking Whether You Could See It Yet
The journey involved repeated enquiries about arrival, and a competition to be the first to spot the water, which was announced loudly and disputed immediately.
It was visible for some time before anybody agreed it was. The first sighting is the moment the day officially began.

2. Establishing a Base
On arrival, a position was selected and claimed with towels, bags and a windbreak, and everything for the day was arranged around that spot.
Relocating later was not contemplated. The base camp is the territory the whole day operated from.
3. The Windbreak
Fabric panels on poles were driven into the sand with a mallet or a stone, took considerable effort to erect, and were the difference between a tolerable day and an untenable one.
Somebody always hit their hand. The windbreak is the equipment that made the beach usable.
4. The Water Being Extremely Cold
Entry was conducted in stages, with a great deal of standing still, sharp intakes of breath and encouragement from people who had not yet got in themselves.
The point of no return was around the waist. The cold water is the ordeal repeated at every visit.
5. Digging
An enormous hole, a channel to the sea, a wall against the tide or a construction of some kind occupied a substantial portion of the day and was defended seriously.
It was always destroyed by the water. The excavation is the activity that consumed the most effort.
6. Sand in Absolutely Everything
Sand reached the food, the bags, the clothing, the vehicle and, weeks later, the house, in quantities entirely disproportionate to the surface area involved.
Nothing prevented it. The sand infiltration is the consequence nobody has ever solved.
7. Eating Something With Grit In It
Lunch was eaten in the wind, on a rug, with sand in it, and everybody ate it anyway because the alternative was not eating.
It was accepted as part of the arrangement. The gritty meal is the standard beach lunch.
8. The Tide Moving Everything
The water advanced or retreated substantially during the day, which meant the base had to be shifted, the construction was lost, and the beach was a different shape by afternoon.
Nobody had checked the times. The moving tide is what reorganised the day without warning.
9. Getting Changed Under a Towel
Changing was accomplished in the open using a towel and a technique everybody developed independently, with a period of real vulnerability in the middle.
It was undignified and universal. The towel manoeuvre is the skill the beach required.
10. Being Sunburnt Without Noticing
The combination of wind and cloud disguised the exposure completely, and the result appeared in the evening on shoulders, noses and the backs of legs.
Everybody was surprised every time. Delayed sunburn is the consequence the wind concealed.
11. The Journey Home
Everybody was tired, sandy, damp and quiet, and the return took the same time as the outward trip and felt substantially shorter because most people were asleep.
Somebody was always still eating something. The way back is the part of the day nobody remembers clearly.
12. The Sand Still Being There in October
Months later, sand continued to emerge from bags, shoes, pockets and the vehicle, long after the day itself had receded.
It functioned as a reminder. The persistent sand is the evidence the day left behind.
One Day, One Strip of Sand
An early start, a claimed patch, a windbreak, cold water, an enormous hole and a tide that undid it – and everybody home by evening carrying sand that would still be turning up in autumn.
The last item is the one that made the day linger. Everything else ended in the evening, and the sand kept turning up for months in bags, pockets and the back of the car – which meant a single day at the coast steadily reminded everybody about itself well into the autumn.
