
Before printing, every copy of every text was made by hand and therefore differed from every other copy. Almost everything below follows from that changing. Here are sixteen.
1. Paper Had to Arrive First

Printing was impossible without a cheap surface to print on, and parchment made from animal skin was far too expensive and scarce for any print run.
Paper was invented in China and travelled westward across centuries before European printing became possible. Paper arriving first is the precondition without which none of the rest happens.

2. Movable Type Was Not a European Idea

Movable type was developed in China in ceramic and later in metal, and metal type was in use in Korea before it appeared in Europe.
What was assembled in Europe was a particular combination of existing ideas rather than the concept itself. Movable type is the invention that reached Europe rather than starting there.
3. The Alphabet Made It Practical

A writing system with a couple of dozen letters needs a small set of type pieces; a system with thousands of characters needs thousands of pieces.
That difference explains why movable type spread fastest where alphabets were used and woodblock printing remained competitive elsewhere. The alphabet is the reason the same technology suited one region better than another.
4. The Real Innovation Was the Mould

The truly novel European contribution was a hand mould that could cast large numbers of identical type pieces quickly, in a durable metal alloy.
Without identical pieces, nothing lines up and the page will not print evenly. The type mould is the invention doing the work that gets credited to the press.
5. Two Copies Could Finally Be the Same

A hand-copied text differs from its exemplar in small ways, and those differences accumulate across generations of copies until versions diverge substantially.
Printing made an edition possible – a defined set of copies that are truly identical. Identical copies are the change that made citation and scholarship work.
6. Spelling Settled Down

Printers had to choose one spelling of each word and use it consistently, and their choices propagated at volume across a language.
A great many spelling conventions are the preferences of early printers rather than of any authority. Standardised spelling is the change nobody legislated.
7. Page Numbers Were Invented

Manuscripts rarely carried them, because every copy had different page breaks and a number would have been meaningless.
Once copies were identical, a page number referred to the same place in every one, and referencing became possible. Page numbers are the invention that only makes sense after printing.
8. So Were Indexes and Contents Pages

An index depends on page numbers, and a table of contents depends on the order being fixed, so both became possible at the same moment and for the same reason.
Together they turned a book from something read through into something searched. The index is the innovation that made books navigable rather than linear.
9. And the Title Page

Early printed books frequently began without one, and the convention of a page stating the title, author, printer and date developed as an identifying and commercial device.
It is a product label as much as a piece of book design. The title page is the innovation that told you what you were holding before you opened it.
10. Errors Became Permanent and Famous

A scribe error affects one copy; a printing error affects an entire edition, identically, and cannot be steadily corrected afterwards.
Several famous misprints have survived centuries and made the editions collectable. Printed errors are the mistakes that scale.
11. Writing in the Local Language Became Viable

Printing a text in a widely spoken vernacular reached a far larger audience than printing in a scholarly language, and the economics favoured it heavily.
That shifted which languages carried serious writing. Vernacular publishing is the change driven by arithmetic rather than by principle.
12. Cheap Print Arrived Almost Immediately

Alongside books, presses produced pamphlets, notices, ballads and single sheets that were affordable, disposable and quick to produce.
Short-run cheap print spread ideas faster than any book. Pamphlets are the printed format that mattered most and survived least.
14. Typefaces Became a Design Discipline

Once letterforms were cut in metal rather than written by hand, someone had to decide exactly what each letter looked like, and that decision applied to everything printed with it.
An entire profession followed from a technical requirement. Typeface design is the discipline created by the need to cut a shape once.
15. The Newspaper Became Possible

Regular, dated, identical publication at volume required exactly what printing supplied, and the format emerged once the economics allowed frequent short runs.
Nothing comparable was possible with hand copying at any price. The newspaper is the format that had to wait for the machine.
16. Making Paper by Hand Survived Anyway

Hand papermaking continued alongside industrial production and still does, because certain qualities of surface, texture and durability are not reproduced by machine.
Artists, conservators and printers still use it. Handmade paper is the older technology that outlived its own replacement.
Identical Copies Changed Everything

The through-line is repeatability. Once every copy of a text could be the same as every other, referencing, indexing, standardisation, correction and scholarship all became possible in ways they simply had not been.
The thing worth noticing is how much of the apparatus of an ordinary book – the title page, the contents, the page numbers, the index, the consistent spelling – is not about writing at all. It is machinery for finding your way around a document, invented because for the first time everybody was holding the same one.
