
There is a reported experience so widespread that it barely gets questioned, and the questioning is where it becomes interesting.
The experience is that time accelerates. A childhood summer was enormous; a year in middle age is gone before it registers. People describe it in almost identical terms across cultures, and it is one of the few subjective claims that essentially everybody makes.
The obvious explanations turn out not to work, and the account that does work has a specific and somewhat uncomfortable implication about how a life is spent.
A note before starting: this article concerns perception and memory research. It contains nothing about wellbeing, mental health or how anybody should live, and questions of that kind belong with a doctor or another qualified person.
Two Different Things Called Time Perception

The first thing to separate is what is actually being measured, because the research divides sharply.
Prospective timing is judging an interval as it happens — how long has this been going on. That can be tested directly by asking people to estimate or reproduce durations.
Retrospective timing is judging a period after the fact — how long did that year feel. That is a completely different judgement made on different information.
The finding that matters is that these come apart. Measured prospective timing does not change dramatically with age; people of very different ages are broadly comparable at estimating how long a few minutes lasted.
The acceleration everybody reports is retrospective. Nobody says an hour is passing faster while it passes; they say a decade went quickly when looking back at it.
That distinction rules out any explanation involving an internal clock running at a different rate, because the clock is measurably fine.

The Proportional Explanation and Why It Is Weak

The account most people offer is proportional: a year is a twelfth of your life at twelve and a fiftieth at fifty, so it represents a smaller share and feels shorter.
It is intuitive and it has problems.
It predicts a smooth continuous acceleration, whereas reports cluster around particular periods and are frequently tied to specific life stages rather than tracking age arithmetically.
It offers no mechanism. Nothing in memory or perception obviously computes a proportion of a lifespan, and the idea that experience is scaled against total elapsed time is an assumption rather than a finding.
And it does not explain the strongest observation in the area — that the effect varies enormously between periods within a single life, with some years feeling long and adjacent ones feeling short.
The proportional account cannot accommodate that, because the proportion changes smoothly and the experience does not.
There is a point about consolidation worth adding. Distinct episodes are stored partly because they differ from expectation, and a routine day generates very little that a memory system would flag as worth keeping.
That is not a failure of memory. Recording every repetition of a predictable day would be enormously wasteful, and a system that stores departures from the expected is doing exactly what it should.
The Explanation That Fits Better

The leading account concerns memory density rather than arithmetic.
Retrospective judgements of duration appear to depend on how much distinguishable material is available from the period. A stretch containing many distinct, memorable, novel events is reconstructed as long. A stretch containing few is reconstructed as short.
Novelty is the key variable. New experiences are encoded in detail because everything about them requires attention. Familiar routines are encoded sparsely, because a repeated day is largely predicted and there is little to record beyond the departures from expectation.
That produces the observed pattern directly. Early life is dense with novelty — everything is happening for the first time, and the encoding is correspondingly rich. Later life contains more repetition, more routine and more predicted experience, and the record is thinner.
So a childhood year is reconstructed as enormous because there is an enormous amount of it stored. A year of settled routine is reconstructed as brief because comparatively little was distinct enough to keep.
The clock did not change. The record did.
The Predictions It Makes

The account is worth taking seriously because it predicts things that turn out to be true.
It predicts that periods containing major change — moving, a new job, travel, an unfamiliar situation — should feel long in retrospect regardless of age, and they do. People routinely describe a few months of upheaval as feeling longer than the settled years around them.
It predicts that highly routine periods should compress, and they do. Extended stretches of unvarying routine are reported as blurring together and being difficult to distinguish afterwards.
It predicts the asymmetry that everybody notices: that a novel period feels long afterwards while frequently feeling fast at the time, because attention is fully occupied. That combination is exactly what the two-systems distinction predicts and is otherwise puzzling.
And it predicts that the effect is not really about age at all. Age correlates with routine, but the underlying variable is novelty, which means the pattern is a description of how most lives are structured rather than a fact about ageing.
The Same Mechanism in Small Doses

The account predicts effects over short periods too, and those are easier to test.
An unfamiliar journey feels longer than the identical return journey, which everybody has noticed. The outward leg is novel and richly encoded; the return covers ground already seen and is encoded sparsely.
A day full of varied activity feels long in retrospect while a day of similar activity blurs, even when both were the same length and equally busy.
Waiting produces the opposite pattern for the same reason. A period of nothing feels interminable while it passes, because attention is on the passage of time itself, and vanishes in retrospect because nothing distinct was recorded.
That combination — long while it happens and short afterwards — is the mirror image of the novel experience, which is short while it happens and long afterwards.
Both are exactly what the prospective and retrospective distinction predicts, and neither makes sense under a single account of time perception.
They are also the everyday version of the same phenomenon that produces the decade-scale effect, which is a reasonable argument that the mechanism is right. A theory that only explained the large-scale experience would be weaker than one that also accounts for the drive home feeling shorter than the drive out.
What Is Not Settled

Considerable uncertainty remains and should be stated.
The evidence rests heavily on self-report about subjective experience, which is difficult to validate against anything external.
Studies of retrospective duration are hard to run properly, because the interesting periods are years long and cannot be manipulated experimentally.
Other factors have been proposed — changes in attention, in the pace of physiological processes, in how people talk about time — and their contributions are not established.
And the reported experience may itself be partly cultural, learned from hearing it described, which would be difficult to separate from a real perceptual change.
The memory-density account is the best available and it is not proven.
It is worth separating two things that get conflated. The reported experience is about how long a past period seems, not about how quickly the present is passing.
Nobody actually reports that the current hour is racing. What they report is looking up at the end of a year and finding that it does not seem to have contained a year’s worth of material – which is a statement about the record rather than about the passage.
The Implication
There is a consequence that follows directly and is worth stating carefully.
If retrospective duration tracks the density of distinct experience, then the felt length of a period is a function of how much of it was novel rather than repeated.
That is an observation about memory, not an instruction. It does not follow that anybody should reorganise their life around producing memorable experiences, and routine has substantial value that has nothing to do with how it is recalled afterwards.
What it does suggest is that the sensation of a year vanishing is not a mysterious property of time or an inevitable consequence of age. It is a report about what was stored, and it varies with circumstances rather than tracking the calendar.
Which makes the common experience substantially less ominous than it feels. Nothing is accelerating and nothing is being lost. The years are the same length they always were, and what changed is how much of them there is to look back at.
That is a report about the record rather than a warning about anything, and it is worth taking as one. Nothing has gone wrong, nothing is running out, and the same mechanism that compresses a settled year expands an unfamiliar week – which is a substantially more even-handed arrangement than the experience suggests.
