10 Things Worth Doing the Night Before You Go

Nothing here is about packing, which is a separate problem. This is about the evening before – the arrangements, the checks and the decisions that determine whether the departure is calm or not. Here are ten.

1. Work Out What Time You Actually Leave

Travel Planning

Not the departure time but the time you walk out of the door, calculated backwards from it including the journey, the margin and everything in between.

Almost nobody does this and almost everybody leaves late. Backward calculation is the single most useful thing on this list.

2. Confirm the First Connection Is Still Happening

Travel Planning

Whatever the first leg is, checking that it is running as expected the night before means a change is discovered while there is still time to respond.

Discovering it in the morning removes every option. Advance confirmation is what converts a crisis into an inconvenience.

3. Check Requirements Rather Than Assuming Them

Travel Planning

Whatever your route needs – and that differs entirely by route and by traveller – the night before is the last point at which anything missing can be addressed.

This article deliberately states nothing about what those are. Verification against official sources is the step that has to be yours.

4. Put Everything You Leave With in One Place

Bagpack

Not packed but positioned – by the door, on a chair, together – so that departure is collecting rather than searching.

Searching is where the delay comes from. Single assembly point is what prevents the morning becoming a hunt.

5. Charge Whatever Needs It

Charge

Everything that will be needed during the journey, charged overnight, along with whatever charges other things – which is the item most commonly forgotten and least replaceable in transit.

It is a two-minute job with a large downside. Overnight charging is the omission that causes the most avoidable frustration.

6. Decide What You Are Wearing

Wearing

Making that decision in advance removes a surprisingly disruptive choice from a morning with no slack, and allows it to be chosen for the journey rather than for the destination.

It sounds trivial and is not. The clothing decision is a small thing removed from a compressed hour.

7. Deal With the House

Whatever needs turning off, emptying, arranging or telling somebody about is easier the night before than in the final ten minutes, and forgetting it produces a distraction that lasts the trip.

The list is short and specific to you. The household check is what stops you worrying about it later.

8. Eat Properly and Have Something for the Morning

Eat

Departures frequently happen at hours when nothing is open and nothing has been prepared, and arriving at the first leg having eaten nothing shapes the whole day.

It requires no planning beyond remembering. Provision in advance is the smallest possible preparation with a real effect.

9. Set More Than One Alarm

Alarm

Two independent alarms, at least one of which does not depend on a device that could fail, charge out or be silenced accidentally.

Redundancy costs nothing. Independent alarms are the precaution proportionate to the consequence of failure.

10. Then Stop

Traveler

Once the list is done, further preparation produces diminishing returns and rising anxiety, and the evening is better spent doing something else entirely.

Continuing to prepare is not the same as being prepared. Deliberate stopping is the item everybody skips.

The Evening Decides the Morning

A departure time calculated backwards, a confirmed first leg, everything in one place, more than one alarm and a decision to stop preparing.

One necessary note on the third item: what any given journey requires depends on your route, your documents and the current situation, all of which change and none of which this list attempts to state. The only reliable source is official information for the countries concerned, and the night before is late to be finding out – so the real version of that item is to have checked it weeks ago and be confirming rather than discovering.
