
In the spring of 1974, farmers working land in Lintong District, near Xi’an in Shaanxi Province, were digging a well when they hit something hard. It was a fragment of a clay figure. What followed was one of the most consequential archaeological discoveries of the twentieth century: pit after pit containing thousands of life-sized terracotta soldiers and warhorses, arranged in formation, each figure individually finished with its own face, hairstyle, and details.
The Terracotta Army is now among the most recognizable images of the ancient world. What is less widely understood is that the warriors are not the main event. They are the perimeter. Roughly a mile away sits a large earthen mound, and beneath it is the burial chamber of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor to unify China, who ruled from 221 to 210 BCE. That chamber has never been opened, never been entered, and never been excavated. It is the one major component of the entire complex that remains completely untouched.
The popular explanation is that archaeologists are afraid of what is inside. The real reason is more interesting and substantially more sobering, and it has to do with something that happened to the warriors themselves the moment they met the open air. Here is why the tomb of China’s first emperor remains sealed.
The Scale of What Was Built

The complex is enormous. Officially called the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang, it covers, according to UNESCO, an area of approximately 56 square kilometers, roughly 22 square miles. It was reportedly constructed over about 38 years, from around 246 BCE until roughly 208 BCE, with work beginning when the future emperor was a boy of about thirteen and continuing well past his death.
The ancient historian Sima Qian, writing roughly a century after the emperor’s death, recorded that around 700,000 workers were involved in the project. The complex is thought to have been laid out on the model of Xianyang, the Qin dynasty capital, essentially reproducing a city underground, though this remains unconfirmed.
Archaeologists have excavated a great deal of the outer mausoleum over the decades: the army pits, workshops, bronze chariots, and numerous other features. Ground-penetrating radar and other geophysical surveys have mapped the walls, gates, and internal structure of the central burial complex without touching it, and those surveys confirm that the chamber is intact and unexcavated. The picture they suggest is not a single room but something closer to an underground palace precinct.

Why the Warriors Are Only the Beginning

It is worth grasping how the army relates to the tomb, because most coverage treats the terracotta figures as the discovery and stops there.
The warriors were never meant to be seen. They were buried in pits roughly a mile from the burial mound, arranged in battle formation, facing outward. They are a garrison, positioned to defend an emperor in the afterlife against whatever might come. Roughly 8,000 figures have been identified, along with horses, chariots, and other pits containing acrobats, officials, and bronze waterfowl. Each warrior was built from a standardized body type and then individually finished, so that faces, hairstyles, and details differ from figure to figure.
The weapons they carry were not props. Excavations recovered functional crossbow triggers, swords, and spearheads: real armaments, stored underground for an army that was expected to need them. That detail says a great deal about how seriously the project was taken by the people who built it.
And all of that elaborate provision is the outer layer. It surrounds a central mound that has never been opened.
What the Ancient Account Describes

Sima Qian’s account in the Shiji is the primary written description of what the burial chamber contains, and it is extraordinary. He describes a subterranean palace with halls and towers, a ceiling inlaid to represent the night sky with pearls standing in for stars, and, most famously, rivers of liquid mercury representing the great waterways of China, the Yangtze and the Yellow River, and the sea itself, set to flow mechanically.
He also wrote that craftsmen were ordered to install crossbows primed to fire automatically at anyone entering.
For centuries these passages were treated as literary embellishment. A historian writing a hundred years after the fact, describing a chamber nobody had seen, producing details that sound like myth. Modern science has given at least one of those details striking support.
Soil samples taken from and around the burial mound consistently show mercury concentrations substantially above local background levels, and the highest readings correspond to the areas where Sima Qian described the miniature rivers. Remote sensing of the air column above the mound has detected mercury anomalies as well. This does not prove there are literal flowing rivers of the stuff, but it is strong independent evidence that large quantities of mercury were placed inside that chamber more than two thousand years ago and remain there. A 2020 paper noted that volatile mercury may be escaping through cracks that developed in the structure over time, and observed that this also supports the ancient claim that the tomb was never opened or looted.
The Real Reason Nobody Has Gone In

The headline version of this story is that archaeologists are too frightened of ancient traps. That framing makes for good copy and is largely wrong. Two-thousand-year-old crossbow mechanisms are not the operative concern, and mercury, while a real hazard requiring handling protocols, is a manageable one.
The actual reason is conservation, and it is a deliberate policy decision grounded in Chinese heritage law and in hard experience. As the archaeologist who led excavations at the mausoleum from 1998 to 2008 has put it, there is no current plan to open the chambers, because the mature technologies and effective measures needed to protect what is inside do not yet exist.
The chamber is believed to be effectively sealed, and has been for over two millennia. That means whatever is inside has reached a stable equilibrium: fixed temperature, fixed humidity, no oxygen exchange, no microbial activity. Breaching it would end that instantly. Air, moisture, temperature swings, and microorganisms would all enter at once, and organic materials that survived twenty-two centuries in stable conditions could degrade rapidly. Silk, wood, lacquer, and pigments are all vulnerable in exactly this way.
The Lesson of the Warriors’ Lost Color

The reason this concern is not hypothetical is standing in the excavated pits nearby.
The Terracotta Army was not the muted grey-brown that visitors see today. The figures were originally painted in vivid colors, applied over a lacquer undercoat. When they were excavated and the lacquer layer met dry open air, it curled and flaked away, taking the paint with it. In many cases this happened within a very short time of exposure, sometimes minutes. An enormous amount of information about the appearance of the Qin army was lost in the process, before anyone had the techniques to prevent it.
That is the lesson archaeologists are applying to the central tomb. The warriors were excavated with the best methods available at the time, and the best methods available at the time were not good enough. Modern excavation of the pits now proceeds slowly, with in-situ conservation applied as figures emerge. Nobody wants to repeat the mistake on a vastly larger and more delicate scale, on a chamber that can only be opened once.
Which is the crux of it: this is a one-time, irreversible action. There is no way to open the tomb, discover the techniques were inadequate, and put it back.
Waiting for Better Tools
So the tomb sits, and the field waits, and in the meantime researchers work on the outside using methods that do not require entry. Geophysical surveying has already produced a reasonable map of the chamber’s structure. Soil chemistry has corroborated the mercury account. Remote sensing continues to add detail.
There is speculation about eventual robotic exploration, some form of minimally invasive probe that could send a camera in through a small opening rather than requiring full excavation, and archaeologists have been open about being curious. The desire to know is not in question; nobody working on this site lacks interest in what is under that mound. The discipline is in accepting that curiosity is not a sufficient reason to act.
There is an irony worth noting in the emperor at the center of it. Qin Shi Huang spent a substantial portion of his life pursuing an elixir of immortality, and by historical accounts consumed mercury preparations in that pursuit, which very likely contributed to his death at 39. He wanted to endure forever. In a sense that nobody intended, the sealed chamber has given him something close to it: twenty-two centuries undisturbed, protected now not by crossbows but by a professional consensus that some things are better left alone until we are truly ready.
Whether that day arrives in ten years or a hundred, or at all, is an open question. The mound near Xi’an keeps its contents in the meantime, and there is something admirable in a scientific field looking at the most tantalizing unopened door in archaeology and deciding, collectively, to leave it closed a while longer.
