Home footage was not something you watched. It was an event that had to be set up, required equipment, involved the whole household and happened perhaps twice a year. Here are eleven.
1. The Equipment Coming Out
The projector lived somewhere inaccessible and had to be fetched, unpacked, set up, plugged in and aligned, which took long enough that the anticipation built substantially.
Setting up was half the evening. The retrieval is the stage that made it an occasion.

2. Finding Something to Project Onto
Households either owned a screen that had to be assembled or used a bare wall, a sheet or a door, and the choice affected the picture noticeably.
A textured wall was a compromise everybody accepted. The projection surface is the improvisation most households made.
3. The Smell of It Warming Up
The lamp got extremely hot and produced a specific smell of warm dust and electrics that filled the room within a few minutes.
It is one of the most commonly reported sensory memories of the whole thing. The warm smell is the detail people describe first.
4. The Noise
A projector running produced a constant mechanical sound that had to be talked over, and its stopping was as noticeable as its starting.
The room got louder rather than quieter. The mechanical noise is the reason nobody watched in silence.
5. The Dust in the Beam
A bright beam crossing a dark room made every particle in the air visible, and putting a hand into it to make a shadow was irresistible to everybody under twelve.
Somebody always did it. The visible beam is the feature that turned the projector into a toy.
6. Something Being in Upside Down
At least one image was inserted the wrong way round, producing a reaction from the room and a pause while it was corrected.
It happened every single time. The reversed slide is the error nobody managed to eliminate.
7. Somebody Narrating Throughout
An adult provided continuous commentary – where it was, who that was, what happened next – much of which was disputed by other adults present.
The disputes were the entertainment. The narration is the layer that made the footage a story.
8. The Ones Nobody Could Identify
Every collection contained images of people and places that nobody in the room could place, which produced extended speculation and no resolution.
They were kept anyway. The unidentified images are the part of the archive that lost its meaning.
9. Seeing Yourself Much Younger
Watching a version of yourself from several years earlier, moving and behaving in ways you had no memory of, is a specific and slightly unsettling experience.
It is the closest thing to an outside view of your own childhood. Seeing yourself is what made the evenings memorable rather than pleasant.
10. The Adults Going Quiet
At some point the room would arrive at footage of somebody or somewhere significant, and the commentary would stop for a while without explanation.
Children noticed and did not ask. The pause is the part everybody understood later.
11. Nobody Ever Watching It Again
The equipment went back where it lived, the films went into their boxes, and the whole thing was not repeated for a year or several, or ever.
A great many of these collections are still in lofts unwatched. The long interval is the reason each showing was an event.
A Household Watching Itself in the Dark
The equipment, the setup, the smell, the noise and the commentary made this an occasion rather than a viewing – which is why a handful of these evenings are remembered better than the years they contained.
The ninth item is the one that stays with people. Almost nobody has moving footage of their own early childhood, and those who do describe watching it as truly strange – a version of yourself you have no memory of being, behaving in ways nobody thought to mention, recorded by somebody who is mostly not in the picture.
