
Time feels like the most objective thing we measure, and the system we use to measure it is almost entirely a set of historical accidents. Here are twelve of them.
1. Sixty Comes From Babylon

Hours split into 60 minutes and minutes into 60 seconds because ancient Mesopotamian mathematics used a base-60 system rather than base ten.
Sixty is unusually convenient because it divides evenly by two, three, four, five, six, ten, twelve, fifteen, twenty and thirty, which makes fractions straightforward without decimals. It has outlasted everything else about that civilisation. Sixty from Babylon is the oldest surviving piece of the clock.

2. Hours Used to Change Length

For most of history an hour was a twelfth of the daylight, which meant hours were longer in summer and shorter in winter.
Fixed-length hours only became standard with mechanical clocks, which could not easily be made to stretch and shrink with the seasons. The technology changed the concept. Hours changing length is the timekeeping practice that mechanical clocks steadily abolished.
3. Time Zones Exist Because of Trains

Before railways, every town kept its own local solar noon, and the differences between neighbouring towns were minutes rather than hours.
That became unworkable once trains ran to timetables across long distances, and standard time zones were adopted to make schedules possible. Commerce, not astronomy, drove it. Time zones existing because of trains is the reason your clock does not match your local sun.
4. Some Zones Are Offset by Half an Hour

Not every time zone is a whole number of hours from the reference meridian. Several are offset by thirty minutes and at least one by forty-five.
The choices reflect geography and national decisions rather than any tidy rule, and they periodically catch out software that assumes whole hours. Time zone data is maintained as a database for exactly this reason. Half-hour offsets are the detail that breaks naive assumptions about time.
5. One Country, One Clock

Some very wide countries run on a single time zone as a matter of policy, meaning sunrise in one part of the country can occur hours later by the clock than in another.
The practical effect is that ordinary daily schedules shift regionally to compensate, with people simply starting the day at different clock times. It is a political choice. One country on one clock is the timekeeping decision that geography did not make.
6. Leap Seconds Are Occasionally Added

Atomic clocks keep time far more precisely than the Earth rotates, and the planet’s rotation is slightly irregular.
To keep clock time aligned with the Earth’s position, extra seconds have occasionally been inserted into the year. They cause real problems for computer systems that assume every minute has sixty seconds. Leap seconds are the correction that keeps atomic time and planetary time from drifting apart.
7. The Second Is Defined by an Atom

A second is no longer a fraction of a day. It is defined by a specific number of transitions in a caesium atom, a quantity chosen to match the older astronomical second as closely as possible.
That means the fundamental unit of time is now a property of matter rather than of the Earth, which is a substantial philosophical shift accomplished with almost no public notice. The second defined by an atom is the moment timekeeping stopped depending on the planet.
8. The Days Are Getting Longer

Tidal interaction with the Moon is gradually slowing the Earth’s rotation, so a day is fractionally longer than it was in the deep past.
The change is measured in milliseconds per century and nobody will ever notice it directly, but over geological time it accumulates substantially. Fossil evidence supports it. Days getting longer is the slow change that makes any fixed definition of time necessary.
9. February Is Short for Political Reasons

The uneven lengths of the months are a legacy of the Roman calendar and successive reforms rather than any astronomical requirement.
February ended up as the short month partly through the mechanics of those reforms, and the arrangement was simply inherited rather than rationalised later. Nobody has managed to fix it since. February being short is the calendar quirk with no natural justification at all.
10. Leap Years Have an Exception, and the Exception Has an Exception

A year is not exactly 365.25 days, so adding a leap day every four years overcorrects slightly.
The rule therefore skips leap years in century years, except those divisible by 400 — which is why 1900 was not a leap year and 2000 was. Most people live an entire life without encountering the exception. The leap year exception is the calendar rule almost nobody has ever had to apply.
11. Eleven Days Once Disappeared

When countries switched from the older Julian calendar to the Gregorian one, the accumulated drift had to be removed all at once by skipping days.
Different countries switched at different times across several centuries, which means dates in historical records can be ambiguous depending on which calendar was in use where. Historians handle this constantly. Eleven disappearing days is the timekeeping event that still complicates historical dates.
12. Midnight Is a Definitional Problem

The boundary between one day and the next has to be defined arbitrarily, and the convention of placing it at midnight is not universal across all systems.
Various calendars and traditions begin the day at sunset or at dawn instead, which means the same moment can fall on different dates depending on the system. Software handles this badly. Midnight as a definitional problem is the reminder that a day beginning is a decision rather than an event.
An Inherited System

Nothing about the clock was designed as a whole. It is Babylonian arithmetic, Roman calendar politics, railway logistics and atomic physics, assembled over several thousand years by people solving unrelated problems.
It works remarkably well for something nobody planned. But the next time a clock change catches you out, or a leap year surprises you, it is worth remembering that you are dealing with a system that has been patched continuously since before anyone could write down what a second was.
